Small Business Saturday is an annual grassroots campaign which highlights the importance of small, independent businesses.
In 2010, American Express launched the event in the US as a response to the growing dominance of large retail chains and e-commerce giants.
The first Small Business Saturday UK took place three years later – in 2013.
The event is also seen as a reaction to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are dominated by the big names in retail.
The campaign encourages shoppers to “shop local” and support small firms within the community.
Over the years, the event has gained worldwide recognition and has become an important date in the retail calendar – wedged between
It is backed by all the major UK political parties and business organisations, such as the FSB.
When is Small Business Saturday in 2024?
Small Business Saturday is held in the UK on the first Saturday in December each year.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday, December 7th.
This date provides a perfect opportunity to start Christmas shopping while giving back to local business owners who are often the heart of their communities and constantly at threat from supermarkets and online retailers.
Why is Small Business Saturday important?
- Economic Impact: Small businesses contribute significantly to local economies by creating jobs, paying taxes, and reinvesting in the community. Supporting them during this event ensures these benefits continue to survive (and thrive).
- Personalised Experiences: Shopping small often has a personal touch, offering unique products and services that larger retailers may not offer.
- Community Building: Local businesses foster a sense of community and togetherness, making neighbourhoods vibrant and engaging places to live.
